STEAD Concurrent Enrollment
Through Aims and Front Range Community College‘s high school concurrent enrollment programs, STEAD students have the opportunity to experience college classes, build the skills needed to excel in college while still supported at STEAD, expand their academic knowledge and interests, and gain college experience and credit before graduation. Colleges and universities often look to see that students have challenged themselves to take the most rigorous courses available to them. STEAD offers a robust AP program with offerings in every academic arena, and concurrent enrollment is an additional option for interested students to push their learning.
Concurrent Enrollment Policies
- Concurrent enrollment is available to juniors and seniors who have demonstrated readiness via proof of success in regular high school classes, executive functioning, and adult-level responsibility. These capacities are verified through hive guide or principal permission.
- Community colleges may have additional requirements for admission.
- Students are responsible for taking any required tests or submitting any documents as required for admission to desired programs.
- Each student may take one concurrent enrollment course per semester, which will be paid for by STEAD.
- Important note: STEAD receives no additional state funding to pay for college, so students must truly be committed to earning college credit. If students fail a class, they have taken money another student could have used.
- If students take more than one class (typically 3 credits) per semester, guardians will be expected to pay for those additional tuition costs.
- In order to preserve our programming and projects, and to broaden students’ academic experiences, students may take courses that are not already offered at STEAD.
- Students may take classes only in the afternoons, in order to maintain their full course load and also remain integral parts of the school community through participating in Hive. This includes remaining at STEAD for at least 20 hours per week in order to maintain full time student status.
What counts as Concurrent Enrollment?
According to the act that governs CE in Colorado, students must be able to earn college and high school credit from the same course, and the courses must be designated guaranteed transfer to other public and private colleges and universities in Colorado. Out-of-state schools with online courses typically do not count as CE (and therefore are not paid for by STEAD) because those institutions have no “articulation agreement” with Colorado to allow guaranteed transfer of credits. Here’s a handy visual related to all that.
